Nature Walks and Birding

BELVOIR’S NATURE WALKS AND BIRDING Birds are migrating and nesting in the serene setting at Belvoir Estate Farm.

Join Bernie VanDenBelt on one of the three separate guided walks on the beautiful grounds of Belvoir Estate Farm in Delaware, Ontario, just 10 km west of London. You will meet some of the many tree and bird species that inhabit this unique, natural setting along the Thames River.

RIVERSIDE TRAIL: Join us as we follow Dingman Creek to its confluence with the Thames River. From there we explore the riverside, first with open views of the Thames, then along its riparian forest. We may even catch a glimpse of the elusive Eastern Spiny Soft shell Turtle. Trees of note include magnificent specimens of eastern cottonwood and sycamore. VIEW

VISTAS: Explore a series of secluded ponds leading to the Thames River. The ponds often provide good views of species such as Kingfisher, Great Blue Heron and, if we are lucky, Sandhill Crane and Great Egret. We hike briefly along the Thames before returning through upland forest edge habitat. Numerous specimens of common hackberry trees are present.

CREEKSIDE ANCIENT OAKS: We begin our walk creekside exploring the riparian habitat along Dingman Creek. A brief hike over open meadow brings us to a secluded pond. Our exploration of the forest edge leads to a pair of magnificent, centuries-old White Oak trees that precede European settlement of the area (and beg for a selfie!).
